A modern approach to the humble flatlay

Say what you will of the Instagram flatlay, but it's become a staple of many a blogger and retail chain. Whether it's food, fashion or beauty, a flatlay shot provides the perfect composition to show off a myriad objects in one frame. I'm even guilty of it myself from time to time (my Instagram mostly consists of food flatlays, but there's a few beauty and fashion ones too).

Although the flatlay has been relegated to the foodie set lately, the focus on beauty hasn't weaned. In fact, this entire shoot was inspired by the luscious locks and crazy beauty trends that have hit runways, YouTube channels, blogs and models' Instagram feeds lately. And the best way to showcase that? With a flatlay, of course!

Being me, I wanted a different take on the flatlay and what better way than by inserting myself into it? Needless to say, my team and I toyed with various ways of doing this – from sticking all the products on a white backdrop to eventually opting for the floor (Megan, my amazing beauty guru who I'm proud to also call a friend, had to prop my head up with my hands for that last shot while Sam bent over me, trying not to block the light).

With summer around the corner, it's the perfect time to experiment with new beauty looks (although, who are we kidding? Anytime is perfect for that!). Bright lip colours have been a staple for me these past few months, but I'll definitely be trying my hand at recreating that amazing glow again too.
